Asthma is a disease of the human respiratory system where the airways narrow, often in response to a "trigger" such as exposure to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress. This airway narrowing causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, which respond to bronchodilators.
I am an older person who has just been diagnosed with asthma following a severe viral infection. I started with a lot of coughing, which I have had frequently in the past, especially when around smoke, perfumes, etc. and then led to severe wheezing that required inhalers, several breathing treatments, predinisone and almost two weeks to clear up...my questions are...is coughing typical and a sign of an asthma "attack" and is is usual for the wheezing to last so long. Is there any good reading material for asthma starting as an adult?

I went to the doctor a while ago to see about my allergies. He rubbed my arm and stuck things under the skin. Nothing. He poked and prodded, his phlebotomist drew so much blood people thought that we were dating. The tests all came back negative. yes , coughing is a typical sign of asthma. So is wheezing.
your lungs and/or airways have been injured some and have inflamation by the irritants - colds, cigarettes, perfumes, etc. and will need time to heal.
