Asthma Support Group
Asthma is a disease of the human respiratory system where the airways narrow, often in response to a "trigger" such as exposure to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress. This airway narrowing causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, which respond to bronchodilators.
the peak flow reading should not be taken as an accurate reading of your lung functions. it is a giudline so a dr can tell roughly how you are doing. it is often neccessary to do fjurther lung function tests such a spiromerty which are much more accurate but very expensive and more invasive and difficult for the subject.
If your peak flow does fall however it is a guide to show that your asthma is not in very good control and you should be going to your dr to have a check or if it is incredibly low then you should be going to the er to get some emergency help.
because now i know my chest relativly well i can sort of judge how i am doing even if i dont take my peak flow. i can almost estimate what my pf will be before i ahve done it by telling how i feel. this has come with years of living with unpredictable asthma and years of doing pfs aswell.
