Asperger Syndrome Support Group
Asperger syndrome - also referred to as Asperger's syndrome, Asperger's, Aspergers or just AS - is one of five neurobiological pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), and is characterized by deficiencies in social and communication skills, normal to above normal intelligence, and standard language development.
You wont' find any one person who truly symbalizes Aspegers as they are all different. My son has some issues that other Aspies don't share. Other Aspies have some issues that my son doesn't share.
Its just I feel I may have it, but I don't want to make an appointment with the doctor in my town who does the diagnosing and look stupid if i have nothing really valid to actually go there..
I know that Aspers various between people, which makes it hard to describe it\s "type"....
Even the most popular portrayals of full-blown Autism, Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, and Miko Hughes in Mercury Rising are faked.
In interviews with both actors about those roles, they both admitted to knowing little to nothing about Autistics, knew no one with Autism, and making up the behaviors based on what little they were told by others, who themselves did only superficial research on Autism.
I watch a LOT of movies, and documentaries, and have seen precious little featuring Asperger's. A couple of documentaries, and not one fictional movie. Given the lousy representation of Autism from Hollywood, I doubt I would like anything they might do featuring Asperger's.
If you really want good representations, read the forums here, and visit profiles to see who is actually diagnosed, who is self diagnosed (like me), and get some books written by Aspies.
Hollywood isn't a good place for representing it - yet.
I might get some flack for bringing this one up, but there is one somewhat decent example on television regularly now, though the show is very careful never to use the term, or claim the character has AS.
House.
There is one scene in one episode where his best friend (Wilson) steps into their bosses (Cutty) office reading from a list of symptoms that sound extremely familiar.
Cutty's response: "House doesn't have Aspergers."
As careful as the show is to avoid placing the label on the character, for many of us that have it, it isn't surprising that a great deal of us feel the character fits extremely well.
My opinion? House is Aspie as all hell!
Don't make the mistake of thinking that ANY representation, including House, is a good representation of "what to expect" from an Aspie.
There is no such thing. Even though I think House fits perfectly, that doesn't mean anything. Aspies are as different from each other as different species are from each other. There is NO "typical" Aspie.
You may find two a lot like each other, then find another and think the third doesn't have it just because he or she is so different from the first two. You can't go by that.

I think she totally rocks! And I can SO empathise with her! She's brilliant about it by the way.
There are other shows out there that are beginning to incorporate Aspies in their cast. I think the more, the different, the better.
As for standards...who cares? We are all so different. I know I'm way different than others, and yet very Aspie. My partner and family just laugh. I've learned to laugh with them.
Although soemtimes they attribute an action or response to Aspieism and I don't feel like it's true, then I do admit to becoming annoyed.
Enough Rambling.
However: realistically here's what you need to know in my opinion. Asperger's has THREE major effects.
1) Retardation of the growth of social skills
2) increased skill in certain "focus area(s)" where the Aspie is often described as almost superhuman in capability
3) Sensory information is routed through the neural complex of the mind in such a way that it is not filtered as it would be in a NT(NeuroTypical) this will eventually result in the Aspie having an "overload" the resultant effects vary from case to case but the cause is always an overstimulation of the senses.
My personal belief is that the 1st and 3rd are directly connected. I believe that the reason that we have a retardation of our social skills is because we have a similar relationship inside to our emotions that we do to our senses. This results in the akwardness, difficulty, and humor issues that we all seem to experience.
I hope this helps you to understand where you are and what you can look for.
