I know we have a creator
He made you from the dust
And never made a being greater
I have tried being SO calm and in the past 5 months he has really improved as I gave him more of my attention and I stopped getting angry at him. However, I cannot deal with this violence because I ran into my room and locked the door(my time out) and he tried to break the door down;ended up breaking the garbage can he used to hit the door with. If I get the least bit angry or frustrated and ask WHY are you so angry he just freaks out even more. I learned tonight in doing some research that MY anger would only add fuel to his fire. I also read that he cannot identify what or why he is so angry;just lumps all the bad feelings together. He actually said he didnt nailed down...safety proof the house. It is also a arented house so I am a nervous wreck about the damage. Tonight I dropped him off to have a ski lesson with his big brother(big brothers and sisters org) and I was terrified when the BB was a couple minutes late. I thought if he doesn"t show up My son will hit me all the way home. I am starting to feel differently about him and I don"t want my daughter and her friends to stop coming over because he scares them. How is he feeling about himself when this happens..he says he hates me..he asks if I hate him all the time..I called the womens shelter where we stayed last summer to get counselling for him(me too) but really...what would help. It is just him and me living together;he says he doesn"t want to see his Dad and the one weekend he did spend with him...well this is the result. Ever since that visit, the meltdowns started again and have escalated. What would calm him down once he starts raging and attacking me? I have MS and Fibromyalgia and I am a small framed woman. I don"t have energy at the best of times and this is just killing me...emotionally. It rips my heart out to see him so upset, lonely . He says he is different than other kids. He also said "Life is so boring..it is all boring. There is NOTHING in this world for me." What does he mean.
It's double tough on single parents and I really feel for ya'. But honestly, you just can't rely on his dad. And still, you need help. The counselling sounds like a good start. Professional advice seems like a good idea. Just be certain to tell them everything you're dealing with. Especially about your fears about your personal safety. That should clue the therapist in to really focus on that behavior. Don't just go in there and say "he has AS and won't listen to me." Print off this posting and give it to the therapist. Tell the ppl at the Women's Shelter that you are dealing w/physical abuse, even if it's embarrassing to you. Medications can often help deminish the episodic(?) behavior, at least to the point where you'll be able to reason with him and correct him with more traditional disciplines. Regardless, being so afraid of "his raging & attacking" is not acceptable in anyone's home. Draw your line in the sand there. God forbid that he would need to go into an institution for a short while, but if that's what it takes for you to feel safe, then do it. But there are plenty of options available before that happens. When dealing w/children, my fall-back motto has always been that's it's not so much the idea to raise the perfect kid as it is to raise them to be a good adult. So when you feel your heart rending, try to remember the bigger picture. That you want him to be able to function better in his adult life than he currently is as a child. I know that it still hurts to see him go thru all the turmoil that he's obviously dealing with and my words are just words, but this is one of those areas, in my opinion, when tough-love is the rule, not the exception.
