Asperger syndrome - also referred to as Asperger's syndrome, Asperger's, Aspergers or just AS - is one of five neurobiological pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), and is characterized by deficiencies in social and communication skills, normal to above normal intelligence, and standard language development.
My 5 year old has been struggling the past year... She's got these very specific bedtime routines, throws a tantrum when we change activities or have to make a change to the plan. She gets so embarrassed and cries or yells when her behavior is corrected. She tells me she is left out at school, and her teacher said today that one girl was mean because mine only wants to play this one game all the time lately (she gets tunnel vision). So many of her things seem like they could be normal childhood stages, but at the same time, she always seems so stressed and gets upset so often. A lot of times her tantrums seen fake, to get what she wants, but I just can't tell. She's ahead academically, I just worry that she isn't fitting and she always says the other kids hate her. This could all be normal, right? She's just sensitive, I think. But days like today make me wonder.

If it is then I think a GP could give a referral to a child psychologist.
My son was doing fine academically but was socially behind. He grew up around adults, not kids. One teacher wanted to hold him back but she didn't feel he should be in school to begin with (told a few of us that). No teacher wanted my child tested. It took till he was a teenager to get the help he needed.
Please don't wait. Most insurances cover most of the testing. It is important for your child to get the help they need now.

You need to contact the guidance office at her school and request that the school psychologist or school district psychologist assess her. Under both Rhode Island regulations and Federal law, they must do so and then work with you if her test results show she is afflicted to provide a "Free Appropriate Public Education" (often abbreviated simply as "FAPE"). If the results show she is on the autism spectrum, then they will work with you to craft an Individual Education Plan ("IEP" - it's all alphabet soup witgh the schools!).
The first step is to get the assessment. You should be able to get this done for free through the schools as it's part of their legally mandated responsibility. If you can't get any satisfaction from the school, go up the food chain if you have to. Some schools are great about it, some not. If you run into loads of problems, you might try contacting your local chapter of the Autism Society. If you get stuck, you nmight find some of the links on this page useful:

Some pediatricians are well informed about autism disorders, and some most definitely are not. It can be a real crap shoot. If you've got a good pediatrician, by all means discuss it with them, too.
