I am possibly on the autism spectrum

I recently found a therapist for my depression and possible anxiety, and I had my first session with her this past week, which I think went pretty well. She asked me a lot of questions, and at the end, she asked if I'd ever considered I may be on the autism spectrum. I have...a lot. I've suspected being autistic since I was like 10. My brother's autistic, and I've noticed a lot of his and his friends' traits in myself...So she's going to have me tested for that, which I'm really excited for. I may finally get an official diagnosis!


The fact that she was the one to bring the spectrum up and not me just makes me feel really good. I often feel like I'm trying to be a special snowflake when I tell people I think I'm on the spectrum (so I don't tell many people), so to have that validation of her noticing it and bringing it up first makes me really happy. If someone can be with me only an hour and notice enough signs to suggest it being tested, then maybe my theory is correct. Either way, to know for sure will be good.

Hi Aelita and welcome to DS. I'm bipolar, and quite frankly, I too felt comfort in putting a 'name' to what I was dealing with emotionally. My son, 20 has been dx'd with aspergers, adhd, ocd, ptsd, and anxiety. He is very talented, can be hyper-focused, yet slow to understand jokes/process speech, lack of friends, and quite strong in his beliefs...life rules. If I can be of any support...I'm here for you. Good luck with the assessment. I've been assessed as having clear traits but not fully meeting all the criteria - but I suspect had I been tested when I was younger I would have got the label.

Asperger's has now been subsumed into the Autism Spectrum Disorders in the US - a set of spectrums - there is not a single spectrum. This help explains why some key symptoms might be entirely missing.
