Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory, multisystem, autoimmune disorder. It is a disabling and painful condition which can lead to substantial loss of mobility due to pain and joint destruction.
My new orthopedic doc (I fired the old one) said a medial compartmental uploader brace might could help me. They measured me for it and I should be getting it this coming week. I hope it will fit as I read here they are supposed to make a cast or some such of your leg and they did not do that for me. The cost will be $660.00 NOT picked up by insurance as my deductible is higher than that.
I am wondering what to expect with this brace. Are they hard to get used to? Will it really help?
The doc says I'm too young for a knee replacement as of yet but when I am older I may end up getting one. Personally I've decided I WILL get one.
I have OA and have had synvisc shots which helped until I fell hard on my knee. My fired ortho doc said that the fall would not have an effect on the synvisc shots and the new ortho doc said it most certainly could have an effect (negative one) on the synvisc shot.
My knee hurts all the time and I cancelled my appointment with a pain management doctor that the fired orthopedic doc made for me. I'm going to see if the unloader brace helps.
Another question is are there any good reputable sites out there for info on medial compartmental uploader braces?

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). Sheck and Sirus [I think it's spelled] is who gave me mine. They were able to inform me about everything that I needed to know. I didn't really research anything, but I didn't need to, as they told me everything that was important. It's a very comfortable brace, with minimal sliding, as long as it's tightened correctly. It gives an amazing amount of support, and doesn't allow your knee to buckle to the outside.

The brace is a medial unloader brace - not uploader, so if you're trying to google it that might help you some. I have one for my knee and I wore one on my other knee for 3 1/2 years before I got it replaced. It helped me quite a bit, kept me going. I even climbed a mountain with it. Mine were made by Thompson - a company that does braces. They did cast my legs to send in so they could mold the braces exactly to my legs. THey cost over 1800 bucks a piece but insurance did pay most of it. They can be a bit tricky to get set just right, and I had to wear a neoprene sleeve underneath them to protect the skin, but I found ways to make it work. I worked on my feet at the time, 12 hour shifts, and I could not have done it without the brace. Good luck with it. And don't give up on it too fast. IT takes some time and monkeying to get it just right. Keep going back to your brace person if its not working for you and have them try to adjust it or something.
