Today I got a cortisone shot in my left shoulder (tendinitis) and top left thigh (bursitis) as I can no longer take anti-inflammatories. The shot for the shoulder was fine...the left thigh hurt (hit a nerve, or just actual bursitis pain + needle) and as I walked out I was limping a bit.

Now, about 4hrs later, my left shoulder is really aching and my top left thigh is sore. Is this normal reaction from the shot? It's like the needle made everything much worse.

I once had a Syn-Visc shot into my left knee where the orthopedist hit a nerve on the second of the series of shots. I gotta tell you, I hit the ceiling. Wow, that was painful.

For me, the pain lasted just for that day and I didn't have any lingering effects. And, I went back for the third and last shot in a week.

I sure hope you have recovered by now. If not, perhaps try some moist heat on the area that is affecting you.

I hope you now feeling much better from the shots. I have had them in my shoulder and hip and the pain seems to be there for a day or two and then improvement begins. Hopefully you are no longer feeling the effects of the shot. Yes, sometimes they do hurt. Let's just hope the benefit outweighs the pain.

Thanks for the replies. Was in lots of pain that first night. Now, 3-4 nights later, my shoulder and left top hip still hurt at night, but more how it used to (mostly if I lie on that side). So am guessing, the shots did nothing in the end to help.

Did they tell you to ice the spots and take motrin sometimes that will help and it does hurt after having those shots hope you feel better.

Can't take motrin as it's tough on my stomach. :-(
Am thinking by now, the pain is less from the the cortisone shot itself and more the initial inflammation, which the shot hasn't helped.

I had some of the same reactions, I am allergic to cortisone, and other steroids. Extreme pain and swelling.

I am getting those shots every 3-4 months in my lower spine. I just got #4. The first one was really nasty. Bad headache, my back worse than ever. It took 2 weeks to fully take effect. It was early winter, so that make winter much better that I had anticipated. Once it kicked in, I was OK. This last one I had 10 days ago. Bothered me that night and the next day. But now, unless I do something stupid, my back and sciatic nerve are feeling pretty good.

I just wish there were a way to stick a bunch of needles in the other 20+ joints that hurt. (My podiatrist said he could replace my toe joints - all 10 are shot.)
