However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
That said, it could also relate to how you took it; dissolving versus swallowing outright. That prolonged how long it took for your body to absorb the medication and could easily have altered the effect. Benzos are fast-acting, so you need to take your dose at once for maximum benefit.
If the sensations passed, you can probably chalk it up to anxiety or to the meds. Next time you take a xanax, try to take it all at once, whether a half pill or a whole pill, and see if the incident happens again.
I hate going shopping, it's the one routine, that really makes in anxious, Shopping and sitting in heavy traffic are the worst for me.
My Psychiatrist told me a few years ago, more panic attacks accrue while shopping than during any other time. But he didn't know for sure why this happened, only that it did.
thegrimms, I went to my family doctor, I had to go anyway to get a TB test for work.
He stated, that Xanax is not suppose to be taken sublingual. By doing that it absorbs to fast, opposed to the proper way, which of course is swolling the pill like a normal person would. So, by dissolving a pill, little by little in my mouth, (I know that sounds crazy) I think that it might not make me really sick, or I will know right away how I will feel, or have a slight allergic reaction before taking the entire pill. or lastly turn green, (chuckle) . At any rate my theory on this backfired on me today, didn't it?
Shopping, actually calms me down, but not in the state I was in today. I bought a book I have been wanting to read, then dashed out! But the driving when anxious is a big issue for me as you. For me getting from point A to point B, when I am anxious causes a dreadful feeling in me.

Of course we are all individuals and things affect us differently. I've never had xanax so I don't know what it would do.
