Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...

Hi,
I'm kind of frozen with anxiety today. I am transitioning out of the Army and applied to customs and border patrol because they were recruiting heavily out of transitioning service members. I passed all aspects of the hiring process until the polygraph, which I was most nervous about. I woke up at 4 AM in time to shower and drive down for it (started at 9 AM), but instead I lay frozen in my bed too anxious to go or go back to sleep, so I skipped it without even contacting them. I'm not too worried about withdrawing from the job because it didn't seem right for me anyway, but now I have been frozen with anxiety and guilt all day unable to do anything (it is 4 PM and I am still unshowered in my pajamas), including I think going to my martial arts class tonight at 6 which is usually my favorite thing to do but I'll probably end up skipping tonight, eventually giving up at the goal of leaving the house today and having a drink to calm myself down, as I usually do (the worst part is all I have left is a flavored whiskey, which tastes disgusting, I prefer it plain). How do you guys handle days when you are too anxious and feel like just throwing in the towel? I always think if I just require nothing of myself or only the bare minimum I will have nothing to feel anxious about, but probably end up feeling worse.

I did the dumbest thing today. I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds. I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym. What a dummy!

You can do this. Just keep moving. Stay hydrated with liquid food and water. Keep a journal to help you process your thought patterns. Do gentle motions to release tension naturally.
Best wishes!
If you weren't guilty of anything you should have taken the test. Anxiety or no anxiety. This is worse than anxiety. this is you making yourself out to have secrets of the kind they'd expect to uncover in a polygraph test. You know you can refuse to answer questions during the test don't you?
You always stay in control. So you can walk out on a test half way through. you don't have to walk out on it before you even have it.
Have you ever been nervous for a job interview? Why was that? What were you hiding? What if they could test for that anxiety during the job interview and disqualify you because of that?
I'm not saying anxiety is an excuse for skipping anything but coming to an anxiety support group and judging someone for having anxiety, saying the only reason they have anxiety is because they are hiding something criminal, is not helpful or supportive. Because if that is what anxiety always means, then why are you here? What are you guilty of?
So, their focus is too make you change your answer. The obvious is you deny regular drinking or drugs.
Example: have you ever stolen anything? Answer: No.
Have you ever taken a pen home from work?
Your answer could be yes, it's a work pen and it comes back to work with me.
Point is if you agreed it's stealing. They disqualify you.
It's your perspective they wanna know about.
I'm going to retire soon. My nexterm job will be fetching golf balls.
Can you use your GI bill to go to school. Just a thought... Best wishes and thank you for your service.
We all have anxiety here. Myself included. So stop and think about that too, before replying.
Anxiety is a time in your life. It's not your life. You can't afford to make a career out of anxiety and you have to surmount it.
You can't apply for jobs that will involve polygraph tests and then not front up to the tests. It makes you look bad. So either don't apply for jobs involving polygraph testing, or sit through whatever number of hours you have to sit through.
Anxiety isn't a get out of jail free card. It just makes life harder. Doesn't exempt you from it. And yes. I have learned that the hard way.
I have not, in fact, made a career out of anxiety. I have been on the site for four days and asked for emotional support about one thing. Trolling an anxiety support group trying to make people feel worse about their mistakes is making a career out of having anxiety. You are on here a lot, I'm guessing you have made your anxiety your identity.
Personally I have accomplished a lot in my life that I am proud of, the answer to my own question above is I had a weak moment but I will move on and learn from the guilt I felt from skipping the polygraph and not let it happen again. I know I have the capability to be strong and overcome anxiety, I have served in combat, done humanitarian service overseas, and faced numerous fears in my life. I will move on and leave you here in your anxiety forum.
