Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
chronic stress can make an individual susceptible to several infections, including those of the sinuses. Stress may also change the breathing patterns of an individual, making breathing more difficult. This may cause inflammation of the respiratory mucosal membranes and make the individual more susceptible to sinusitis.

Anxiety is a feeling of apprehension or fear and may often be due to an unknown source. Anxiety and sinusitis are closely related. Individuals suffering from chronic anxiety also have reduced immunity due to chemical imbalances that are similar to those produced by stress. Also, patients suffering from chronic sinusitis often have severe headaches and other pain symptoms, and this enhances their anxiety. A study published in the February 2005 edition of "Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery" found that individuals with psychological problems such as anxiety have more severe long-term sinus symptoms and worse quality of life even after surgery, when compared to those without anxiety.
@sallycat- I do actually have TMJ, I didn't know it could affect the sinuses though. Interesting!
Because I feel a little like I have the flu all the time (tired, achy) I usually would feel quite bad by the time I went to the doctor with the mucous streaming out of my nose.
However, a few years ago I started having the infections in my "back" sinus cavities-no runny nose. I found this out when I went to my doctor and said I have been feeling worse than usual for 3 months and if my nose were running I would think I had a sinus infection. Sure enough I did and she looked in and it was so bad she wrote a prescription for 3 weeks of antibiotics.
What usually happens now is I start feeling a little more tired than usual, then depressed, then crying easily and I finally go to the doctor and sure enough-sinus infection. I may feel a dryness in my nose and a tenderness around my eyes and cheeks which I also will attribute to allergies, dry air, whatever, but it is the change in mood that tips me off..
I try to use the netti spray bottle twice a day (disgusting but boy does it feel better afterward)and I take benadryl at night to sleep and to help with allergies.
I see and have read about a definite relationship between these health problems. Undiagnosed, untreated sinus infections can cause fatigue and depression. On the other hand, being tired and depressed can make you susceptible to sinus infections from an immune stand point.
I know doctors don't want to over prescribe antibiotics but
I go to a family practice so I don't get the same doctor each time and my brother goes to doctors where he lives and everyone of them takes one look inside of our noses and prescribes the antibiotics.
In our culture, we all self diagnose colds and allergies but sometimes it is an infection and there is a cure and relief.
I just wanted to share this although this may not be your problem it sure opened my eyes and has saved me some discomfort.
Still I am just getting over a sinus infection. My son had a TBI and can't drive so I have had to drag myself out to drive him to doctors and it wasn't until I got so tired I could barely stand up that I realized-sinus infection.
**** The important thing is to NOT use water directly from the tap. It needs to be boiled and cooled down OR use distilled water.
I find irrigation of the sinuses is very soothing and feels good and afterwards brings noticeable relief. I recommend trying a neti pot.
I hope things get better for you soon.
