Ive received some questions about this so I wanted to post
1) Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) is made by Wyeth the same drug company that makes Effexor XR (which as you know is now generic)
2) It is an SNRI and is NOT metabolized in the liver..so it is basically the active component of Effexor XR without having to go through the liver
3) Received FDA approval for the treatment of Depression and Anxiety and awaiting approval for indication of hot flashes related to menopause.
4) It does NOT require titration so can be started at 50 mg a day which is the therapeutic dose
5) Side effect profile was better than Effexor XR with nausea/dizziness/insomnia being the main side effects reported.
6) Skeptical view: Wyeth's new drug very similar to Effexor and allows it to keep its hand in this very lucrative market.
Likely wont be covered by insurance companies since the generic Effexor XR is available.
Optimistic view: Nice that its not metabolized in the liver, better side effect profile than Effexor XR. Im in the middle....

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). My doctor put me on 100mg pristiq last week because i had become deppresed, i was on paxil and have a high bp, both which i understand are big no no,s, my diastolic shot up to 96! and i quickly became suicidal, i was going to cut my head off with a carving knife.
I went to the doctor today, he is withdrawing me fronpristiq within 3 days, he realises he made a big mistake.
He wated me in the Nut House but i said no, im scared.
Hes given me 30mg remeron,3mg clonopin,ambien and to half the pristiq for 3 days then stop.
I hope he knows what he is doing.
Im feeling very unwell from the pristiq and blame becoming eppressed on it.
If i start to reaction to all this i will go to nutty house.
People dont realise there is great need for an anxiety and deppression med in one, alot of us cant work owhen where on anxiety meds.
Zoloft and paxil are the only ones out there.
There is no need for pristiq when we have effexor xr, its just anotherway for insurance companies to line their pockets at our expence both financially and emotial health wise.
