Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
When faced with a trigger....my mind would immediately go into fight or flight...just like you. For me, no matter what yhe trigger was, it was always the same response. First, the heart rate would kick up a notch, then the adrenaline would cause me to start feeling a bit trembly. I would then start to perspire. My mind would start racing and the words....."Oh No!"....would proceed every thought that would come to mind. Oh no, here it comes again. Oh no, I'm gonna faint. Oh no, what if someone notices. Oh no, what if I have a heart attack...etc!
By now, I was so worried about my health and sanity that I almost couldn't remember what started these feelings in the first place. As you can imagine these episodes left me exhausted, spacey, floaty and depressed.
The way I overcame this:
When faced with a trigger and when I felt my heart start to quicken....I now looked at this as a warning bell.
Instead of fighting it I would take a few moments and have a some long deep slow breaths....in and out to a count of 5 on each inhalation and exhalation.
I would then talk compassionately to myself...like....it's OK, you know what this is....it's just a habit that you have created with this trigger.....you just kicked on your sympathetic nervous system....that's all it is....just a little adrenaline.....this can't and won't hurt you. Then I would just relax a bit or continue to talk to myself in a way that I would have wanted a friend to talk to me....with kindness!
It took some time but before I knew it I never had another anxiety/panic attack. Those feeling of floating dissapered.
I wish you the best at your conference!
