To make things a little more tolerable while you're waiting for this to pass, you can:
Work on taking deep breaths.
Drink some soothing tea like chamomile.
Take warm bubble baths.
Put on music that makes you feel better.
Watch funny movies.
Meditate.
Paint or sculpt or draw or something else creative.
Stretch or do yoga.
Sit outside and read a book you get absorbed in - something fun and light or inspirational. Notes To Myself is a good one.

I've heard a lot of people talk about help they've gotten from cognitive behavioral therapy as well as using Byron Katie's techniques.
I am working my way through "The Anxiety and Panic Workbook" by Bourne. He has a lot of really good ideas and information that I find calming. I love that it's so big! http://amzn.to/1qShspu
Others are using different medications to help. Most health food shops will have a homeopathic center where you can find remedies for anxiety. Some avoid caffeine and sugar. I like Propranalol because it doesn't tranquilize me.
