General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. In recent months I seem to have gotten a new anxiety problem. Whenever I get very anxious, the muscles in my hands and arms tighten up to the point where it is almost impossible to use them. An example of this would be an inability to write.

I haven't experienced this with my hands, but have with my jaw. I think I clench when I'm anxious making my jaw ache and sometimes numb and tingling.

Hmm, I haven't had something like that, but might I suggest kneading your hands and arms when you feel stress coming on? Deep breathing is also a good idea.

My friend, I experience something similar. When my anxiety really kicks in it makes it difficult for me to write... almost makes my hands feel heavy, like lumps of clay. I start to think I'm having a stroke or heart attack. Usually my hands will then either get sweaty or cold. Hope this helps.

I don't have that problem in my hands, but get a similar feeling in my legs. It feels like all of the muscles in the back of my legs are tense. Unfortunately this also makes me feel like I might pass out (never have thank God). I actually just got back from the store and had this feeling while I was anxious. Take deep breaths and tell your muscles to relax. Sounds simple but works for me. If I allow myself to be bothered by the thought of my body not working properly it makes my anxiety worse. It's easy to get caught up in the thought. Try to stay in control of your thought process- I'm with you I struggle with this all the time!

Thanks to everyone who has responded. So far, I think Valentine and I have the closest similarities. There are times when I try to write something, such as a check, but just can't get my muscles to work right -- if at all. I have a friend who is a nurse, and she told me to stay away from anyone who causes me stress. I tried that during the weekend, and it actually helped. Guess I'll have to do a better job of picking friends.
