Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...

We live in a somewhat small area, and I've met with my CBT therapist twice. And although some of what she's said so far has been positive (mostly to start walking and taught me 1 breathing exercise) she's also extremely--I don't know what word to use but she thinks she's better than everyone--and has been very rude to me in corresponding e-mails. She charges $150/hour, not sure how much our insurance is going to cover, and also doesn't process claims for anyone, we do that ourselves. She has a private practice in the basement of her home and also works as a forensic psychologist (which is maybe why she's been rude to me--used to having to be tough with people?) and so far in each session and over the phone, has continuously bragged about the fact that she worked directly with Aaron Beck (I guess the guy who 'invented' CBT) for a year or so.
I've done searches for CBT therapists in our area, and her name is always the first one and closest one (which is a 25 min drive anyway). I want to cut ties with her b/c even the thought of her or when I see her emails, makes me feel intimidated and uncomfortable. But I'm afraid I won't be able to find anyone as good.
There is a place I am checking out that's very close to where we live, who's website says one of their treatment approaches is CBT, but don't they have to be specially certified or something to be considered 'real'? It just worries me that when I went to the Aaron Beck site and typed in to look for a CBT therapist that their names/practice didn't come up? Is there any other place I could look that could lead me to additional CBT therapist? Our zip code is 22554 (Virginia). Thanks in advance.

can you search local psychologists/psy, and look at what they specialize in? also, will your GP provide a list of ppl they recommend? hope you find someone you are comfortable with. all the hoopla in the world doesn't matter, if they are a jerk.

Thanks for teh reply, lovemy. I did end up doing a local search for psychologists, etc, and just made sure they specialized in CBT. I guess maybe they don't have to be certified in it to be good at it, I just don't know much about it lol. But I have a new one lined up that's more family-based, so I'm hoping they'll be gentler with me than my current therapist. I was really passive with her and I just felt like I kept getting intimidated and sort of emotionally beaten around. She wanted to help me, but only on her terms and only exactly the way she said. So that wasn't very helpful. Thanks for your advice. Hugs.

I agree, The Moon. I'm hoping this new one will work better. Someone who can put their ego to the side.

They should always do that to begin with.
