It is a manifestation of stress.. but it could just be the way your muscles, bones and nervous system are wired.. thats why not everyone will get jaw problems. My "right" jaw joint makes a slight pop noise if I open my mouth. Left one doesn't.

My jaw is so tense and I clench it so much when I'm really upset, that sometimes when I open my mouth I hear a hug cracking sound. So you're not alone in that. I also give myself some great headaches to with clenching.
I always use to chew holes in the sheets, while I was asleep and during waking hours - any piece off material had no mercy for my continual teeth grinding - hope yours isn't stress related.
I do not grind my teeth at night, but there is a tighten feeling around my jaw, and also it is hard to open up my mouth to eat , it's so tensed up.
