Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
You did all the right things. You handled it the perfect way...except for one thing: now you are dwelling on it. This is a big mistake we all make. We get ourselves through a panicky episode, and can pat ourselves on the back for doing so. But then.....we do what we do best......we start to think about it. And dwell on it. And analyze it. And then we are right back in trouble again.
You have got to try to get your mind off of it. It is hard to do. I know. It takes persistence and a lot of effort. It can take 2 hours of consistently trying to re-focus your thoughts. Or it could take 5 minutes. But the point is, you have to keep trying, no matter how long it takes. Do a crossword puzzle. Call a friend. Sing a song. Go online and find a brainteaser website. Do whatever you have to do to not allow yourself to think about how anxious you feel.
If you want to cry, go ahead and cry. There is no shame in crying. It is a release that we all need. I cry all the time. And I always feel great when I am done. So you go ahead and cry, but then, get your mind off of anxiety and worry. Fight every single negative thought you have. Every time you worry, say "No, I will not think that way. I am stronger than that." And say it EVERY time. Every single time. You are teaching yourself and your brain that you are strong, and if you only correct your negative thoughts every 4th time....you will get nowhere. You have to do it always. It is hard at first, but after a few weeks, you don't have to work to do it. It starts to become more and more automatic.
You have to learn to reassure yourself or you will never get better. You are such a sweetheart and I hate to see you go through this so I am just going to tell you what I think is the honest truth. YOU are the only way through this. You have to dig deep and find the strength that I know is inside you and you have to learn to calm yourself down. I know you are probably thinking, "Well, its kind of hard to just snap my fingers and calm down in the middle of a panic attack." But it is that easy. We all have it in ourselves to calm ourselves down. Every one of us. There are no missing pieces to our brain. We all have the same parts everybody else does. We do have the ability to calm down, but we are too busy panicking to do it.
You are going to be just fine. Just be good to yourself and don't give in to your worry!!!
