I am such a total loser when it comes to meeting people. I have such terrible anxiety in meeting people that I have panic attacks in social situations so all my life I have done all I can to avoid those situations. Have been like this all my life and at 58 years old I don't see much hope that anything will ever change. I see a therapist regularly and I think that it has helped me deal with depression. It took me a long time to be able to get comfortable in talking with my therapist but over time I am able to talk with her. Even after all of this time I still have problems with stuttering and anxiety when we get on difficult subjects. My therapist is starting up a small therapy group for people that suffer from anxiety. When she brought up the subject to me this week I immediately felt myself going into a panic. My chest got tight, my throat closed off and felt like I could not breath. Even as I write this right now I feel the anxiety rising within my stomach and in my chest. We talked about the group and I did agree that I would give it a try. I don't know if I can do this but I know that I have to do something because I don't want to keep on living like I am doing now.

Hello- I am new to the group

My therapist really knocked some sense into me last Friday about my spending. She said that there are needs and there are wants. She said that there is always going to be cheap stuff to buy, but do I need it? The answer is mostly "no". So today, I am taking back some things that I bought online at Kohl's, namely a 9 x 12 rug and a quilt for my bed. I also bought sheets that I don't need...
Best wishes! You are not alone.
My suggestion if you really want to work on this is to do role plays... Role plays are a great way to practice while learning to manage the anxiety... Builds self confidence and feelings of safety... You can transform... Let others in the group believe in you until you can believe in yourself.
After each role play you can also write about what you felt/experienced and then share that with the group the next time you meet.
I know the feelings of choking, etc. You are not alone and you can recover!
