Now, I've started to take time to appreciate things you only notice when you slow down - a beautiful spring day, the birds singing, the buds beginning to open up. My cat going bat-shit crazy when a moth gets in the house, a great book I can savor, a long shower, going through old letters, browsing magazines and catalogs.
Sometimes just noticing makes all the difference.
This world is going at a fast pace and is full of stress.....no wonder anxiety is at an all time high. I'm glad I've gotten off the rat race track.....
I think one of the amazing things is that we have achieved - as a side effect for anxiety - that slowing down - is what most people LONG for. (Not the anxiety itself of course)
When I talk with people, they say they WISH they had the time to sit with their cat or watch a sunset. The truth is that they HAVE the same amount of time everyone else does but they don't MAKE the time to enjoy these things. They're racing around with a long list of "have to's." (which often aren't really even "have to's" but more "shoulds" and imaginary obligations they make up to keep themselves in the rat race)
And so many of those who are busy have lost the ability to even see the bunny in the yard or the rare hummingbird. All this beauty is just "background noise" or annoyances to them.
We have a gift. We KNOW that these things are what life is all about.
Yes, I have anxiety which is an intensely unpleasant feeling. But I know of no other group that has the capacity to feel intense joy at those everyday miracles.
We're kind of amazing that way.
