Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
In the school environment, rather than look at people for "friendliness", look for what you want to do yourself and use that information to work on the "friendliness".
It's too easy to say the words we have been saying, so add new words to go with those usual words. Keeping a journal will help you to find the patterns of thought to encourage your "job" thinking.
By making the school "job", it will be easier to help you find your path to strength. Changing schools makes the "job" easier to define. You mentioned that nothing changed, so it's time for you to change your "reaction" and "response" to encourage change in the reaction and response from others.
You can do this, you are not alone!
It sounds as though you need to work through whatever is causing your anxieties, as even a change to a new school has not ended them.
I would suggest reaching out to your school counselor. Let them know how you are feeling, and they may be able to suggest some things that could help you. It might be nice to just reach out and talk with someone. That is what they are there for, take advantage of their help!
I hope you know that you are not worthless, and I'm willing to bet there are many classmates of yours that are feeling the same way right now. You are definitely not alone. And great job by the way, reaching out on this site!
Best of luck to you!
<< Paul here.
<< I sympathize with your situation. In trying to analyse it I see a phrase
<< in your post that I will question :
" Hi, I'm 15 years old. I just moved to a new school, because I didn't have any friends. I could never fit into a group because of my anxieties, I stayed home whenever I could, pretending to be sick. I hoped this would get better in the new school, but now it just repeats itself. Nobody really wants to hang out with me...
<< I wonder if this is true. I sometimes see a person(persons) who has
<< obvious limitations. For example in a wheelchair. After noticing him, I
<< wondered if he lacked friends seriously. After *that* I saw someone come
<< along, sit down, and excitedly talk to this person. A friend. :) I've come to
<< think anybody, anybody at all, can have a friend or two.
<< Hmm, so I urge you to be on the watch-out for ppl who seem to express
<< a little interest. All's you need to do is 1)not evade/avoid them, 2)kinda'
<< make clear you notice 'em. That's the main thing. Often one then plays
<< it cool -- not to seem too eager. Until, maybe, you walk near them
<< sometime, maybe in the cafeteria. Then just say hi.
<< And so on.
" and it makes me feel like I am the fault. My anxiety just got worse since then, but I don't know what I can do, maybe I'm just worthless "
<< Nah.
<< Good luck . :) . . . --Paul
Going to the library is good if you can get away with it. If you're a giant swot, it's a 'thing to be' that people don't think you're a loser, they just think you're a nerd.
Social failure at high school is sheer hell. I hated high school. Hated it beyond description. I dragged myself through it day by day, in an intense state of humiliation and loneliness, until it mercifully ended. and then I got a job.
And everything changed.
When you are out of school you don't have to keep showing up somewhere where you are constantly reminded of how awful your life is. It's easier to have some privacy. After all, if you spent all weekend home alone - nobody at work knows that. You have privacy.
And so you have the privacy to say 'i'll go join a saturday netball team' or whatever. and you can just go and start that up. And over time grow something.
I recommmend at school joining choirs, music groups, art groups, debating groups. Anything where you are in a crowd and don't have to stand out, so that you have something to do at lunch time where you're not alone. Over time people will start to talk to you.
It 's what I would do if I had to go through high school again.
But I don't know how to just make friends, I don't have the courage to just say Hi to someone I don't know. If I just think about joining a group I get very stressed about all the new people, what if they reject me?
Maybe I can just focus on the schoolwork, but won't I be very sad if I don't go out with friends and such?
Do things, on your own, and just work on the thing you're doing. The more you do, the easier it will be to be where others are, and just do your thing.
Give them a good smack. What if nobody talks to you? Well - what if everybody talks to you? What if an alien in a space ship shows up and whisks you away to save the world? What if flies crawl up the window?
What if is meaningless. it's anything you can imagine. 'what if' doesn't have to be realistic. It just has to trigger your insecurities to feed your fears. If you let it.
Don't let it.
If you say hello to someone they will say hello to you. That is the thing that will happen. Nothing else will happen. Practice saying hello. Just say hello.
You are being beaten to death by your anxiety. You have to fight back! :) Challenge it.
High school may be tuff but you can get through it just like the rest of us. Act confident even if you do not feel it right away. Start by asking someone in your class if they took notes for an upcomming test or assignment on the days that you were out.
Remember you have friends here! Wish you the best always.
The best thing you can do is join stuff, it forces you out of your comfort zone, and it becomes hard to get involved without making friends. One friend is all it takes to start and build up a great social circle. Also, joining these groups teach you to collaborate and work with others, important skills for your career in the future. The main problem is going to be the nervousness on the inside. Let me tell you everyone has anxiety, and isn't necessarily always a bad thing. Don't fight the anxiety, it'll just make it worse. Accept that it is there, and do what your anxious about anyway. Eventually, the anxiety will disappear or greatly reduce.
I believe in you, you can do this. Why do i believe this? Because I believe anyone can do it, it just takes the guts to get the ball rolling in the first place.
