Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. when i catch myself in this state, my standard practice is to pull over, get out of my vehicle and ply grounding tools. my personal fave is walking circles around my vehicle, shaking my arms and legs until i shake ^it^ off. i repeat as needed. it's okay if it takes me two hours to get to the grocery store. better to arrive alive than on time.
What I tell myself is that I can't think about my other problems when I drive--I have to focus on the car ahead of me, do periodic rearview mirror checks, and be conscious of the vehicles on either side. Also, I have to assume that everyone else is experiencing similar challenges as myself; there will also be new drivers, overconfident drivers, distracted drivers, or drivers who are under the influence of mind-altering drugs.
After a while this potentially scary situation is not as scary as it could be--life--after all, IS scary. At any given point we could be killed in an accident, and it is only our instincts that keep us alive. For the most part our instincts operate quite well. Keep that in mind. As well--most everyone else doesn't want to get into an accident and are usually trying their best not to.
Bear in mind that there will always be assholes out there who will cut you off, not let you in, or get angry at you for no reason. Be that chill, accommodating person on the road, especially given the fact road rage events are rising.
Don't let the anxiety win!
I also had a lot of problems to drive. It took me more than a year to feel secure to drive, and even today, if I had somebody else to drive, I just give the keys.
But you need to battle the anxiety, and get that. I know you can do it.
Go slow, step by step, breathe and try to stay calm. Try to listen to music while drivin, sing with it, helps maintain you there.
