Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...

I had a few panic attacks in cars, and now I'm afraid to drive alone for long distances and I have told myself that I can't go anywhere if anyone else is driving which is making getting around difficult. I managed to get a hold on it but it happened again recently. Does anyone else have this problem? How do you deal with it? I'm starting to feel like a moron.

Yep, I've had and still have that problem. It's very frustrating. I had gotten over it once. Now, something has triggered it again and I have to go through all the same crap I went through before, about fighting through knowing that panic attacks won't kill me...etcc..etc...I hate it.

Oh ya. I have had problems with driving off and on. I absolutely can't drive long distances at all. I am sure I would die. Although I rationally know that is not going to happen. Trust me I feel like a moron as well. Why the hell is this happening? I can't figure it out. I used to be "normal" then one day I stopped being able to do many things I have always done. I hate it so much.

I believe this is a control issue. Do any of you have a problem with the car taking control when you are driving? Or, further more, you have a problem of other people driving with you in the car, and not control of the wheel? Ask yourself this... why do you have a problem with not being in control? This may lead you to the main issue of your anxiety. Did you have a situation where you weren't in control and something went wrong?

I had this problem years ago until I went on meds. Then I was fine until I went off of the meds. So, I am back on them now and it is getting a bit better. I don't know why this happens but it can curb your lifestyle quite a bit if you are not careful.

My fear is a loss of control of self and a loss of control in front of others which would lead to embarrassment.

anxiousme I feel the EXACT SAME WAY you do. I don't know what to do...it's so frustrating. Huh800 I do have issues when I'm not in control. It's interesting that you ask whether or not I've been considering the question "why do I have a problem with being in control?" because I ask myself that all the time. It may be because I feel like when I'm in control, nothing will happen but if someone else is, I am alone with my thoughts and I have no control over where the car is going, and I don't know what to think from there. I had a panic attack the other night when my boyfriend took another route home from the place we were. Now I don't want to go to that place anymore unless I'm driving and even then, I'm uncomfortable. It's taking a long time to desensitize myself, fighting back against the anxiety.

I hate driving on highways at night where there is no median to separate traffic. I get scared that with every head light coming towards me that they were gonna cross center line and kill me which would give me a panic attack. So now I don't drive alone at night or I have someone else drive. I also can't drive on the interstate because it gives me panic attacks. So trust me ur not alone! I still don't know how to handle the interstate because I haven't dealt with it yet, but u just have to remember to breathe and do some positive thinking. Try turning some music on and sing along to distract u from thoughts of having a panic attack. Good luck to you! :)

My fear when I drive has nothing to do with wrecks or getting hurt in any way. My fear is that I'll just up and lose it, wherever I am. All in my head!
