Second and third generation antidepressants are formulated to make them difficult if not impossible to abuse, and they're often times very expensive so those without insurance suffer financially from this.
The drug companies and doctors have put those of us who suffer from anxiety/depression in a virtual no win situation with antidepressants because of their costs, the difficulty many have in tolerating them, and the fact many don't work well over the long term.
The cheapest, most effective and easiest to tolerate antidepressants are your in your Benzodiazepine class of antidepressants, which cover everything from Ativan to Xanax.
The problem with benzos is they are cheap, effective and easy to tolerate. So the drug manufactures don't like them. And doctors don't like prescribing benzo's because patients may abuse them.
So....here we are stuck between big pharmaceutical companies who have the largest most powerful lobby on Capitol Hill and doctors who we must trust, but often times side with the large pharmaceutical companies when it comes to treating anxiety and depression.
The fact is, even without thinking about anything, I feel anxious. It's an uncomfortable, terrible way to feel. I don't want to feel that way anymore. So I mentally try to make it go away. I feel nervous, so I finally say to myself, "Why do you feel this way? What is causing stress in your life?" and I go over everything that might be troubling me, and all the possible outcomes of the worst case scenarios, as well as solutions to these problems.
I then make a lot of lists, of things I can do to reduce the stress in my life. And it's hard for me to do these things because I'm still anxious, but eventually I'll get it all done. And then I'm sitting there thinking, "everything is fine now," but I'm still anxious and nervous.
I think medication is the right choice for some people. I don't believe anxiety is always caused by the way someone thinks.
If everything is fine now, but you're still anxious and nervous you may have a chemical imbalance in your brain which is generally attributed to a lack of serotonin. Just sayin...
To Jennielou, some alternatives to SSRI's are Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, and Wellbutrin.
I personally found Wellbutrin to make my anxiety worse, but that's just me. Klonopin worked great for the week or so that I was taking it, but this was some years back when I still thought my anxiety was going to be temporary, and so I decided against it because of its addictive qualities.

That is the main heading for meds to treat the symptoms of anxiety.
Another category to try stepping more to the side of SSRIs is the complete list of types of anti-depressants as well, found here :

Good luck in your search -- all good luck against possible side effects. If you're very worried about side effects, I suggest asking your doctor more about it before you leave your appointment. Most of the time they prescribe a small dose as a "starter" then build up more after a few days or the first week. It can make a huge difference if your doc is able to say "cut this in half and take only __mg for X days, then take the full pill for the rest."
...You just never know!
