my therapist says this "checking out of reality" is a defense mechanism of our anxiety to avoid the things we're anxious about.
she's given me advice, but the gist of it is to try to find something to focus on, to pull you back into reality. i have some anxiety workbooks and will try to do that. or i'll pray, take a walk, try to ask myself what thoughts are causing me to check out..
Your body is using all the resources at it's disposal to deal with the "threat" that it feels is "real". The 'fogginess" is really a helpful thing - all these things that the body is doing, it thinks it's doing for your benefit. If you can, try to see your body as friend of yours in this world - it is not your enemy - just trying it's best to "protect" you. It doesn't know that you are really fine, safe, etc.

Maybe you could say a few kind words to the parts of your body that are working the hardest. If your heart is beating very hard, tell it "thank you" for beating so hard because you think I'm in danger.
