I haven't worked in over 4 years. I have terrible anxiety when dealing with people(especially on past jobs) I've been on effexor xr for years. My psychiatrist never talks to me, just prescribes drugs. People around me treat me like garbage because I am not working. I would like to get ahead in life and be independent. So far I just feel like I am going nowhere in life.I wish I could get over this and tolerate a job.

Lee3kelly know what you are talking about. I was the same way and still am to a point. I am off work now on sick leave because of my anxiety. dont know if i will be able to go back. job is very stressful. anyway back to you. I had a psychiatrist who would not talk either. she use to just sit there and let me talk . never offered me any advise nor did she try to give me ways of dealing with my anxiety. I quickly found another doctor. its like meds. you have to keep looking till you find one that you are comfortable with and willing to open up to. your doctor needs to be willing to listen to your needs as well. maybe you havent found the right medicine yet either. i know how frustrating that can be because after years of trying i am still looking for the right med. i am learning to deal with my anxiety in different ways now. i use deep breathing, soft music and just sitting in a quiet room for a while seems to help me. dont give up. if you are not satisfied with your doctor find another one. best of luck to and here if you need to talk.

I didnt work for a few months myself because of anxiety. First off I think it would be good for you to get a new therapist, one that talks to you and helps you work out your problems. Drugs can only last for so long and make you deal with so much till you need to learn to deal with it on my own. Instead of being scared, this is what I did, I just went out and did it, worked and dealt with anxiety as it came rather than being scared that it will be horrible. P.S. don't listen to people if they give you crap about not working.. a lot of people won't understand and you cant get mad at them if they have never been there. Be strong and live your life... don't let fear rule your life. Good luck!!!

Phychiatrists are not supposed to provide therapy - there job is to prescribe medications which therapists cant do. Normally you would be in therapy and your therapist would keep your psychiatrist updated with your progress so he/she knows how you are doing. This is how they can judge if your meds are working correctly or not. Generally a psychiatrist will not prescribe meds to a patient unless they are also in therapy - at least that's how it is where I live. Meds alone will not solve a problem, it helps manage the symptoms while therapy helps you get past them.
