Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
I am happy to read that you do go to the store which means you do get out once in a while. Like Roxanne says it's important to face the fear and do a little more each day. Great job Roxanne! It's hard to do but the more often you do it the easier it will become.
Lila, I know that feeling of invisibility so well. I lived it for years and it does cut to the core of your being. Please get help. You do not have to live like this. Please keep chatting with us here. There are lots of caring understanding people here who will not judge you and who really do want to see you get well. We don't think you are invisible.
Take care
I hear exactly what you are saying... Often times, the posts and responses I read are a complete refelction of myself...
That is why this page has been so very helpful to me...
I know now I am not alone and, more importantly, I am not judged...
My heart to you, Lila...
When I do go out, it's like I do a mad dash, I don't want anyone to see me, yet I'm experiencing loneliness. A while back I was shopping, and like you, I sometimes just look down, feeling like some kind of invisible yet disgusting monster. Someone said something to me, you know small talk about prices or something, and I LITERALLY looked behind me and all around because I didn't even feel human or like anybody would actually consider me a subject to even engage.
I try and do as much as I can, pushing just slightly a little farther here and there. I can't imagine that this is how we are intended to live. I agree with the previous poster about seeing a therapist. They have online therapy, and in some places they do skype as well. Even though I still have to go into an office, my doctor sees me via tele-web, basically just like skype. But to be honest, if I could skype from home, I may NEVER venture out at all. I really hate skype though, because you can see yourself and I hate the way I look!
What helped was realizing how MUCH I can do from home - especially with the internet. I can take classes for free on Coursera and a couple other sites. And they have boards where I can discuss things with other students from all over the world.
I can download books so I can learn good things, be inspired, laugh, etc.
With Netflix and hulu and cable, I can watch tons of different movies, tv shows, etc.
I can also buy what I need on Amazon a lot of the time so I don't have to go out hunting for something.
I love trying new recipes, trying to sew (I'm terrible at it!), knitting, etc. At home, I can draw, paint, do pottery. Right now I'm learning to play the violin with videos on You Tube and taking a French class by CD.
There are virtual book clubs, learning groups, social groups, etc. so I connect but still feel safe.
And I've found work I can do from home.
I find I feel comfortable talking on the phone and having friends over so when someone suggests getting together, I let them know I need to be home in case a delivery arrives (or whatever is going on that day) and ask if they might be willing to come by for tea.
So that I don't feel like a total shut in, I go out into the yard and sit outside - in back if I don't want to be bothered and out front if I want to wave to neighbors and maybe have them stop by for a chat.
I WISH I could hop on a plane and fly out to Hawaii when I felt like it. I'd love to go to a play or concert. I wish I could enjoy a day at the mall with friends, go out for a leisurely meal with friends...but that's not in the cards.
It pisses me off until I realize that most people have some limitations. Either mental or physical, financial or relational, etc.
Your post was really articulate and had a certain literary beauty to it. Sometimes it's better to get in the moment with someone and ask them about your relationship with them. It almost sounds like you assume that people don't see who you are or the beauty of what you bring with you to a social relationship. When did you first know that this was an issue (if you don't mind me asking).
Thanks!
