Anger management commonly refers to therapeutic techniques by which someone with excessive or uncontrollable anger can control or reduce their emotions. Typical examples include the use of deep breathing and meditation as a means to relaxation. Psychologists recommend a balanced approach, which both controls the emotion and allows it to express itself in a healthy way.
That said... he may be responding badly if he thinks that you are expecting him to "fix" the problem or emotion, or if he feels like you are blaming him for the problem existing in the first place.
You might try opening with what you need from him (just to listen/care/reassure, etc). However, if this is the tone already, and it feels like a red flag... it might also be good to follow your gut and cut your losses earlier than later.
Each person is accountable for his or her own actions. Avoiding his anger isn't your job.
