Anemia Support Group
Anemia (or anaemia), which literally means "without blood," is a deficiency of red blood cells and/or hemoglobin. This results in a reduced ability of blood to transfer oxygen to the tissues, and this causes hypoxia; since all human cells depend on oxygen for survival, varying degrees of anemia can have a wide range of clinical consequences.

Sorry to repeat, but, Realy scary tired and dont know where to turn. I have shortness of breath, feeling very winded and feeling very week, hard to get throught the day.I have blood tests that indicate I have low red blood count, but, everything else within normal range. Could just the low red blod count cause these syptoms, and, if so how can I increase my RBC. I am a vegitariam...and I have a history of anemia and still take iron suppliments and am trying to increase them. Thanks

Well, I was always told to eat more meat!! But that won't do for you--how about increasing other forms of protein? Spinach is high in iron, protein is in nuts and seeds--talk to a nutritionist to see what would help in your case. Hope you feel better! Hugs, Judy

Maybe you need to increase you iron supplements. I take about 10 iron capsules a day (18mg apiece) just to keep my iron at a normal level. I am a semi vegetarian, meaning I don't eat beef or pork but will eat chicken, turkey, or fish a few times a year. Depending on how low your RBC is, your doctor may want to give you something to get it up quickly. Have you asked if there's anything they can do for you? I don't usually start to feel the tiredness unless my HCT gets down to about 28 and at that point I need help getting it up.

is it possible that you may need B12?...
CarrieDawn
JudyKaren has a good point. If you are a vegetarian, you should also be supplementing B-12 because chances are, you're not getting enough. My son and I take 1,000 mcg daily and my husband takes 2,500 mcg daily. If your level is too low, you would probably need B-12 injections to get it back to normal.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
