Anemia Support Group
Anemia (or anaemia), which literally means "without blood," is a deficiency of red blood cells and/or hemoglobin. This results in a reduced ability of blood to transfer oxygen to the tissues, and this causes hypoxia; since all human cells depend on oxygen for survival, varying degrees of anemia can have a wide range of clinical consequences.

Hi everyone! I became a vegetarian a couple years ago. When my brother (who eats meat) was diagnosed as iron deficient and was prescribed iron supplements, I knew I was most likely iron deficient too, though I was never diagnosed. I had been skipping periods, and as soon as I started the iron, my periods came back and they were heavier. Does that mean I'm iron deficient? And also, is anemia and iron deficiency the same thing? If not, could I be anemic?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I think if you think you may be iron deficient, you should consult your dr. and have your blood tested. You may just need to take a multi-vitamin. Just because your brother is iron deficient, it doesn't mean you are. Do you have any other symptoms?

I agree with Caroline and in answer to your question about the different types of anemia. There are more than one type. Iron deficient is the most common, but you can also become anemia from blood loss, lack of other nutrients. there's also sickle-cell anemia, where red blood cells are misshapen and autoimmune hemolytic anemia where the immune system attacks the red blood cells quicker than the bone marrow can replace them (this is the kind my cousin has).

There is also pernicious anemia..where you do not have the intrinsic factors to absorb b12, and sometimes other nutrients, needed to make blood cells. Thats what i have and it is an autoimmune issue.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
