Anemia Support Group
Anemia (or anaemia), which literally means "without blood," is a deficiency of red blood cells and/or hemoglobin. This results in a reduced ability of blood to transfer oxygen to the tissues, and this causes hypoxia; since all human cells depend on oxygen for survival, varying degrees of anemia can have a wide range of clinical consequences.
Hope this helps.
The # 1 cause of iron deficiency anemia in men and POSTMENOPAUSAL women is blood loss from the GI tract...this can be upper GI blood loss (gastritis, esophagitis from NSAIDS) or LOWER GI tract (a colon mass, diverticulosis, etc)
This is why they have you doing stool samples..if they are (+) for occult blood you will likely be advised to have endoscopy and colonoscopy...
