Anemia (or anaemia), which literally means "without blood," is a deficiency of red blood cells and/or hemoglobin. This results in a reduced ability of blood to transfer oxygen to the tissues, and this causes hypoxia; since all human cells depend on oxygen for survival, varying degrees of anemia can have a wide range of clinical consequences.

Anemia/IV iron treatments

Hello, new to the site. For the past 3 years I have struggle with iron deficieny anemai. At first the docs thought it was due to heavy periods so I had a hysterectomy and underwent 6 weeks of IV iron treatments. All was well foar about a year when I become so sick my husband rushed me to the ER where once again I was anemic. THis has been an ongoing problem. The docs cannot find any solid reason for the anemia. I have been told, a hidden GI bleed, a poor diet
ect. Has anyone out there ever had the IV iron treatments? ALso has anyone ever been diagnoised for no reason and then something appears and you find out why? I am getting disperate. symptoms coming back, tired, sleeping whenever I can and short of breath. any comments would be apprecated.

How about your thyroid? I was diagnosed with multiple nodules on both lobes and have gone through the ultra sound test, and the radioactive iodine scan, next I'm off to an Endocrinologist. I too am Iron deficient anemic and have heavy periods, not sure if it's from the thyroid, or the thyroid isses come from the anemia, but the symptoms you've described sound so familiar with us thyroid patients, tired, lethargic, heart palpitations, hair loss, skin dryness, lots of other symptoms. Just a thought...good luck.

I have IV iron treatments every two months. When i was first dx they didnt know why but my Dr told me there was so little blood in my body i should have been dead. They started treatments with a full blood transfusion and they couldnt draw enough blood to type me. They ended up keeping me in the hospital giving me 7 pints of blood. The Dr has been able to somewhat regulate my levels with the IV iron treatments and b12 injections but still a year and a half later i still dont know why i am anemic. but the doc tells me i will need these treatments the rest of my life. I wish i had some helpfull advise for you but i am here if you have questions. I hope you feel better soon

Hey Taryn
1) Have they done iron studies to document that the anemia IS an iron deficiency anemia
2) have you had a colonscopy and endoscopy to look for the source of the bleeding?
3) Have they checked a reticulocyte count to ensure your bone marrow is responding appropriately to the anemia?

    My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
