Hi Papertrucker, I thought you were an AKA. I have never heard of any sucess with useing any kind of lubricant in connection with a suction socket on an AK. Could you explain the process of donning your prosthesis for me?

Ok I am an above the knee amputee.I have a very long stump what I use is a very sticky white full suction liner it has no rings or diaophrams.I spray a lubricant in it so that it does not get stuck together while rolling it on after rolling it on I spray this same lubricant on both the sock and in the socket.If I don't i can't get the sock all the way in the socket as the lubericant let's it slide in.I have a vent hole at the bottom that is like a one way valve i push the button(letting air in) during the day if I am sitting alot to relive the pressure any extra lubericant is expelled through this valve.It takes about 2 mins to put the leg on in the morning.I wear the leg anywhere between 14 and 16 hours a day some times longer if I am doing something I also wear a shrinker sock at nite as edema is some times a problem.

Thanks for that information. I am going to run it by my prosthetist and see if it will work on my short stump. It's only about 8" measuring from the hip.

I use ALPS Skin Lotion which I rub directly into my skin. I wear a total contact suction socket with no liners, so my skin is directly against the soft inner liner that is permanently attached to the hard outer socket. The ALPS makes the skin slide against the socket instead of pulling at the skin and tearing it after wearing it for 16+ hrs/day. I don't know if this is really the answer that would help you with putting the ALPS on the liner....I think it is more for rubbing directly into your skin when your skin comes in direct contact with the socket or liner. OK Breezie, I must be stupid, stupid, stupid. Don't feel like you have to comment on that! So, you are saying that the lotion does not screw up the suction contact? That would make my life much easier if that works for me. I use the Alps silicone lotion on one trouble spot, that high inside piece on the MAS socket, and that has helped me a lot. The link shows a different kind and I'm not sure if Michael has it but I will try to get the same stuff. Thanks to you and Papertrucker for this info. You probably told me before but like I said, stoopid.

The Alps skin lotion that you see in my link is 100% silicone, so you only need a few drops to rub into your skin - a little goes a long way! It really softens/moistens up the skin and makes it slightly slide against the socket rather than your regular "dry" skin becoming inflamed or torn or creating sores due to friction. I only use this on the upper inside of my leg, about where the leg and hip meet. It is not oily at all and suction is maintained when I use it. I'll show you the stuff and put some on your hand when I see ya next. The little 4 oz. bottle pictured lasts me about one year.
