I always wear shorts. I have never had a problem with screening because of my leg. They have not ever asked me to remove it or the shoe on my prosthetic leg. I have had it wiped with a cloth that they use to check for bomb making residue.They usually have me step to the side and wave the wand over me because I set the metal detector off.

Thanks for the info. My wife who is an amputee is going to be flying here from Madagascar soon. I was going to have her pack her prosthetics in with the stow-able luggage below the plane.

Just did a round-trip flight to Seattle and back. I am a bk left-leg amputee. Took off my right shoe and placed it in the bin along with the other checkpoint items. On both flights I informed the officers at the metal detectors that I had a prosthetic leg. Both officers said "go through", the detector beeped, and they placed me in a holding area for further processing.

Other officers then came over to do the inspection and I was escorted to a side area to be inspected. They swabbed both my hands and my prosthetic for explosive residue. Then they asked me to stand up and hold my arms out and then wanded me with an electronic device as well as performed a manual pat-down. They are gender-specific with their officers as I found out.

I would suggest that you allow an extra half-hour for this process. These officers are very courteous, have a fixed routine and cannot be rushed.

I have a younger friend that is a right BK amputee who got placed in a holding room for a while. He still doesn't know why, but I suspect that younger folks may be profiled more.

I travel quite a bit, mostly one day business trips. Flying out of LAX, I have to plan an extra 15 minutes. I tell the TSA person I am an amputee and I get moved into "secondary" inspection.

If the TSA agent is "new", it will take a full 5 minutes or so to go through the whole routine. A more experienced agent will get me through in a couple of moments at most.

As a frequently flyer, I really hate the extra step but it has come to be expected.

I just got back from Canada and the whole process was very quick and easy. I told them I had a prosthtic and they swabbed hands and leg and did the pat down and off I went. The crew on the airline (Southwest...gotta love them!) were amazing, disassembled my chair, stowed my crutches and made sure I had a forward bulkhead seating so I didn't have to keep the leg bent at 90 degrees for 5 hours. A very nice man moved so I could sit there. The whole trip was painless. As long as you tell them they seem to go out of their way to make it easy for you.
