Holy S#$%! We just brought Rollie in the house from his walk in the snow! It is snowing here where I live, it is 8:30 PM and dark. We live in the mountains, so no street lights, houses far apart, trees and bushes and rocks.
At about 8 I thought, well, he's asleep in bed and it is quiet, I think I'll take a shower! My daughter, her fiance and son are in their apartment attached to my house and my son is in his room right next to our bedroom where Rollie was a sleep. I poked my head in his room, said, "I'm taking a shower so keep an eye and an ear out for Rollie." and we agreed to leave his door open to be sure he would hear something. Also we have a tiny house with a loud front door.
So I come back and go into our room and Rollie is NOT in bed! I start looking through the house, I tell Max and we are both looking and we realize he is not IN the house and it is snowing outside. Max ran out the front door and I went and got my daughter and her fiance. Max saw fresh snow tracks in the snow and started to follow them. Rollie was asleep with a sweat suit and woolen socks on but no shoes or slippers. He found Rollie around the side of our neighbors house where he keeps yard junk, very dark.
The boys walked him back home and my daughter and I were getting his chair ready by the fire with dry clothes and blankets. He is safe and warm now and I am still shaking.
We discovered that no one had locked the new lock on the door, supposed to be last one in does it but.....
However, it means that Rollie walked by my son, opened the front which is noisy, walked about a city block in the snow. My son is stunned he didn't hear anything, he can't believe how quiet Rollie must have been.
The boys also commented that his foot steps in the snow were straight on, not a waiver or wander, like he knew where he was going. Also they remarked that on the side of the house were so many things that he could have tripped on but DIDN"T. He had straight, sure steps!
It is amazing to me, I wonder who my husband's angel is? maybe his dad but I guess it is not quite time for Rollie to go.

Once Went up our street a ways.. turned back and tried to get in a neighbor's house.
Our son put up a couple door alarms. They worked OK if I remembered to turn them on....
Good luck with this new behavior.
Kind of funny, my mom sets off the alarm every stinking morning because she opens the door to the garage to see if my car is there, to know I'm home....when in fact she just walked past my bedroom and said hi to me. So I jump up and run to the garage door to see she is just peeking out to see the car. The alarms are helpful but don't prevent her from going out.
Wow, you do have angels looking after Rollie. Must have scared you to death! Glad he's ok.
Another time he went across the street to a neighbor's house and went inside and told them they needed to get out of his house. Thank goodness they knew him and brought him back home.
We installed deadbolt locks on all the doors, even the storm door on the sunporch. Also put slider locks on the bottoms of the doors and he never seemed to find the lower ones.
He is now bedridden and will probably never walk again; has to have complete care, from feeding to anything else he might need. Seems to be getting harder and harder.

I am so sorry for the terrible scare.. but glad he is safe....
My husband once got lost on a walk. Our whole street immediately sprang into action but a kind soul on another street had already offered him a chair and had called the police.
This incident stuck with my husband for weeks after and he never ever ventured out on a walk again. Then not too long ago he started trying to get out the front door but luckily without success.
I have an alarm mat by his bed so I hear him as soon as he steps on it. Now at least I can sleep in peace.
