My husband has been taking Xanex for a long time, started with his PTSD 10 years ago but in the last week I think I am noticing it isn't effective anymore. I think I will contact his doctor for a new suggestion. It used to be that I could give him a Xanex and BAM! he'd be asleep but now, it doesn't seem to do anything and he gets so anxious, upset in the evening.
Ron takes Ativan for the sundowning. and agitation. So far.. pretty good.
I'm thinking he does not like the noise from the vacuum at all. This morning he unplugged it twice while I was using it. I couldn't stop because he had picked at his diaper and it looked like a mini snow storm in the LR around the couch. He had a very distressed look on his face. Could be he is sensitive to the loud noise ..
Jim is very sensitive to loud noises. If the TV is a little loud, he puts his fingers in his ears until I turn the volume down. Or if family is here and the teenagers get loud, he puts his fingers in his ears.
He is also on Xanex but just recently started taking it, so I can't shed any light on whether or not it is working. He does seem to calm down a lot about an hour after taking it. I usually give it to him on Tuesday and Thursday mornings so I can get him ready to go to day care.
Also very sensitive to noises, especially when they are unexplained.
A very good geriatric psychiatrist who shares time between the VA and the University Hospital here said he's having a lot of success with Trazadone to help with the anxiety and stress with the addition of PTSD, but I'm concerned about more side effects. Just such a balancing act.
