My Dad has Alzheimer's along with several other medical problems. I am an only child and retired nurse. I just lost my wife to cancer 16 months ago after caring for her for 2 years. I suffer from depression along with other medical conditions as well.
My dad lives in a small town and he currently still is trying to live on his own. I have a nursing aid that stops in 4 times a week to assure that he takes his meds when I can't go to check on him.
Dad get confused with his medications very easy so I had to take over everything doing with his medical care. He also gets confused with paying bills and most anything else that requires any detail. He has sufficient income but can't make right decisions about things nor will he let me make them for him. He is wasting and losing money. I do have POA over him and little by little I have been taken over his bills and paying them from his account. The problem is, he now is with drawing cash from the account and is not leaving me enough to pay the bills. Yes he is still able to drive in the small town, but soon that will end I am sure. But before that happens is there anything I can do to stop him. I do not know what he is doing with the money. He acts like he doesn't have a dime on him but yet I have seen his wallet when we have went out to eat together. He is almost to the point he needs to have some with him 24 hours a day. I want him to come live with me since I have a larger and newer home, but he will not think of it. Telling me he will never leave his home. While I love him very much I can not handle a lot of stress in my life anymore. Currently I just want to run away and turn him over to social services, but yet this is not my nature, but I don't want to have another breakdown trying to take care of him.
To make things worst he was never there for me as a child or as an adult. We only become close after my mom had a stroke 22 years ago. But still he has never been one to go out of his way for me. I am a Christian and want to do the right thing but don't want to hurt myself as well. I am open to any and all advise. I know what I should do medically, but when its family it is so different.

Look at what my best friend did with my picture!

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.
Is there another relative or friend of the family that could move in with him?
He has brothers, but they all live out of town. They are no help. My youngest daughter from Florida is here visiting and helping me with him currently. Wish she could stay?
If you have financial POA perhaps you should talk to his bank and restrict how much cash he can withdraw... or you may have to stop it altogether. It is also possible to talk with Soc Security and have yourself made his "payee". You do have to make a yearly accounting of the monies but it is not a difficult thing to do.
Don't try to tackle ALL the issues at once. Take then on one at a time.
Good luck to you while you navigate this long, hard journey with your dad.
My mom is 69 and in the relatively early stages of the disease but her main issue right now is that she can't manage her finances, something that she was very good at and took a lot of pride in before she got sick. And she has worked so hard to save and invest money. She gets very confused and panic stricken and ends up paying bills twice or not paying them at all. She has plenty of money coming in via her pension and social security and she also has a very healthy bank account but she's afraid to spend a dime because she thinks she's losing all her money. Fortunately she has come to realize, through several missteps that ended up costing her several 1000 dollars, that she can't handle her finances at this point and has turned that over to me and my brothers. We set up a system at her home where she takes her daily mail and puts it in a box we designated that sits on her desk. We wrote on the box PUT MAIL HERE. It took her a while but she has now gotten in the habit of doing that. The few exceptions are when her anxiety is high and then she wants to open everything and then gets freaked out if something looks like a bill. But my brother goes to her house once a week and they open the mail together. Then they sort the junk from the bills. She still writes the checks for the bills but my brother is there to help her. We also have access to her bank account on-line so we can see her account information on line. This lets us check her account regularly to see if she's writing any strange checks or taking out tons of money via ATM, although she can't drive any longer so that hasn't been an issue. If you can do that, it may help you keep better track of your dad's activities. It's really like keeping an eye on a child.
My mom also had a hard time remembering the meds. We set up a pill box and alarms and the whole nine yards and she was still messing that up. My brother came up with some goofy system but it works for her so she's been doing well for a couple of months now with taking all her medication.
My family is all so new to this and it's so overwhelming and we've had to try several different things sometimes to make certain things stick, but it's easier when you break things down into smaller chunks and tackle things an issue at a time, like Jamr41 mentioned.
I'm sorry you don't have more support or help, to take some of the burden off your shoulders. But try to find resources in your area to help you manage some of this, or give you some ideas. Talk to your dad's doctor about your concerns and how you may have to transition him at some point. My friend's mom has dementia and is in assisted living. The doctor is the one that laid out a plan for when it will be time for her mom to go in assisted living. The plan was, if you can no longer manage X, Y and Z, you will need to be in assisted living for your own safety. That took the burden off my friend so it didn't look like she was being the bad guy. My friends mom took it better coming from her doctor than coming from my friend.
