Alzheimer's Disease Support Group
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia and characterized by progressive cognitive deterioration with declining activities of daily living and neuropsychiatric symptoms or behavioral changes. An early symptom is memory loss (amnesia), usually manifesting as minor forgetfulness that becomes pronounced with illness progression, with relative...
I think it is a combination of things... weakness, vision, judgment
and so on.
When he was at hospice .. he got out of bed.. and just slid to the floor.
How is the walking ? Can he walk more than a few feet un-aided ?
The other day he got up from his chair and I pulled it away so he could step away from the table. However he decided to sit down again and landed on the floor before I knew what was happening.
Getting him up is another story. I have had to call on my neighbours to help as he is a dead weight when he falls. Luckily he has never yet hurt himself.
i have an alarm mat by his bed which sounds as soon as his feet hit it.
We were at some friends to watch the game and Rollie missed his mouth and poured his soda down the front of him, all over his pants. So my friend lent him a sweat suit and then I took Rollie to go pee and then he peed all over my friend's sweat pants so he had to lend Rollie another pair! Usually I have a change of clothes for him but of course this time I didn't.
I think it is vision, not that he needs new glasses because his are new but I think he has trouble judging distance.
A warning to all! They loose their balance as the disease progresses. We do have to have eyes behind our back.
One day I took her to a doctor appt. she got sick and peed in her pants. I did not have any change I leaned that I had to have a bag with diapers and clothes with me all the time. We have to treat them as if they are babies.
He is having great difficulty getting dressed ,even with my help. Wlaks around aimlessly with no idea of where he is going. It gets sadder every day!
As far as incontenance, even though he does still use the bathroom sometimes, his depends is always wet when I check.Language skills almost nil.
he is falling deeper and deeper in the clutches of this entrapment..and there is nothing he (or I ) can do to stop the progression anymore. Still give the como meds but doubt they are doing anything anymore.
If I would stop he would bump into me. Sometimes he would put his hands on my shoulders .. like he was steering me. Drove me absolutely nuts.. and we got a lot of "looks".
All these things.. these dozens and dozens of things are a part
of falling into the abyss.
How many years are you and Deborah into this? When were your husbands diagnosed? When did they start moving at a quicker rate?
Spring 2008, the memory problems were just too many and too big for us to think it could just be PTSD so he was evaluated again and this, PTSD with Early onset Alzheimer's. In summer 2008 he could hold a good conversation, drive a car, use power tools and today he cannot bath himself.
My nana has fallen several times, once breaking her back & arm.
We try to watch her as much as possible, but it still isn't enough sometimes (esp. at night or preparing meals).
She can walk (slow/unsteady) but from her room to the kitchen or living room, we now use a wheelchair.
A walker only seemed to make this issue worse.
