It sure looks like you're in a big period of decline. I always have " a moment" that lasts a couple days when this happens. I get over it and get on with it.. but it is always hard.. sad.

People with dementing illnesses may lose the ability to recognize things or people, not because they have forgotten them or because their eyes are not worlking but because the brain is not able to put together information properly. This is called agnosia, from Latin words neaning "to not know".

This is not a problem of memory, he will remember you quite well, but his brain can not figure out who you are from what his eyes see. Nobody understands exactly what is happening but this distressing symptom is a part of the brain damage.

Reassure him that you are his wife, but avoid arguing. Although this may seem heartbreaking, it is important for you to reassure yourself that it is not a rejection of you (he does remember you) It is just a inexplicable confusion of the damaged brain.

Thanks, Susan, that was helpful. I do get the sense that he does somehow connect that I am still very important and when I tell him, "I'm your wife." He smiles and says "oh, that's good"

Like tonight as we were falling asleep he had to keep his hand on me if I moved he moved. like he had to know that I was right there.

Jim seems to know who I am, but not that I'm his wife. He continually asks, "Who are you?" and when I tell him I'm his wife, he sometimes smiles and sometimes he says "I don't think so. I'm not married."

Deb, at least he wants to marry you. That must mean he sees something that really appeals to him.

Deb, Neal still knows who I am but in the last few months he has developed the habit of making sure he is touching me when we go to bed too.
And sometimes I will sort of wake up and just find him staring at me, when I ask him why he just says he wants to see me and often he will be patting me like he is reassuring himself that I'm still there so he's still safe.
