Rollie had a visit with his palliative care doctor today. He is doing as well as can be expected. He has lost 14 pounds in the last 2 months, which is in keeping with the illness. His general attitude is good, better than most ALZ patients. He is becoming more incontinent. We are just giving him relaxing meds now.
She talked to me about a book she was reading about dying in our current society. She said the premise is that we don't really let people die gracefully and we should. We should accept that there are times when the only thing we can do (and the right thing to do) is to let nature take it's course and allow people to die with dignity. I support this philosophy 100%. I did not ask her how much longer she thinks he has, just didn't really care to ask.
She always asks about me and makes sure that I am also taking care of myself.

I so agree there comes a point when we let go
and let nature take over.
And, we know what their feelings are. They would not want to live just for the sake of being alive.

There comes a time when medicine cannot do anything to improve your condition. I believe that is the time that you need to accept and do everything possible to make the rest of your life as enjoyable or peaceful as possible.
Even when Ron couldn't talk and slept 22 hours a day.. he still enjoyed a car ride and an ice cream cone. When he sat.. stone faced in the car and let his ice cream melt - I knew it was over.
Although he lingered on a few more months... I knew at that moment he had nothing left he enjoyed.
I always wished ( and still do) that I knew how long. It would have
made those last hard months easier.. more bearable. Maybe some different choices on my part.
I do think the clock is ticking, Deborah.
LOL, what he says makes very little sense and then every once in awhile he says something that really makes sense, what a character he is.
One of friends said to me the other day, "You know I think it is ok that he is going, I think he has really had a full life."
Yes, Mr. Rollie has really had a lot of adventures. I have been writing some of them down. He was such a man.
I only hope to continue on as long as you did.
