I met a wonderful woman on an Alzheimer website some years ago and we became close friends. It was a shock this week to learn of the unexpected death of her husband at age 67. He developed pneumonia and was unable to respond to antibiotics.
My friend was really struggling at home but determined to care for him despite his often aggressive behaviour towards her. I'm in awe of her devotion and the loss will affect her deeply.
The only consolation is that he received excellent and compassionate care in hospital. This is a cruel disease as we lose our loved ones twice, to Alzheimer's and finally to death.

My mom who is turning 91 in another month is also starting to lose her memory and becoming more and more child- like in her behaviour. I don't know what I would have done if my husband were not in a nursing home. For the past 2 months I have had to spend nearly every day with my mom either in hospital or at her place and she makes me feel guilty the odd day I do not go.
I must sound like an awful whiner but it sure is not easy.
