Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
I am 52 years old and have been drinking since 5th grade. My older sister and 2 uncles got me started. I have drank heavily all my adult life. Have tried many times and many ways to quit but always continued to drink. In and out of jail and rehab many times. I have had 4 DWI s in my life.
I had pretty much given up hope of ever quitting and even had thoughts of suicide.
About 3 months ago a pal of mine got a DWI and was ordered by the state of TX to go to AA,during a night of drinking on a whim I offered to go with him once. I later tried to get out of it but he said I promised and he didn't want to go alone so I went. I thought what the hell its just for an hour I can stop drinking a little before the meeting and buy beer on the way home and that is what I did. The next week he asked me to go again and I thought okay last week wasn't as sucky as I thought it would be so again I went.That time I waited until after the meeting to start drinking bought 12 pack on way home. The next week I decided I could at least not drink on AA night.
The day before that meeting was the last time I have drank! I have been sober now for 78 days and for the 1st time feel like I can have a chance at a normal happy life.
I know AA isn't for everybody but if you haven't tried it you might give it a try. I was sure it wouldn't do anything for me because I considered myself too much of a loner not the group type I have even chaired a couple of meetings now and really enjoy being an active part of such a wonderful organization. I got a sponsor at tonight's meeting who is going to help me with doing the 12 steps.
In the meetings they are always saying keep coming back, well I most certainly intend to do that!

Congratulations on 78 days sober and getting involved in service which for me has been a major part of my AA stuff keep it odaat
Oh and rivalono we can chose jail or aa or intensive outpatient in most states. No one can force a drunk into aa or anything else really, anyway, as we all know!
