Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

When I'm having an emotional crisis and feel I'm going to fall, I'll go to a movie theater alone and get wrapped up in a good movie. It's so loud in there, I cannot hear my thoughts, which is good for me sometimes. Usually after time has passed, I am ok.
Right now, I am telling people I just don't drink anymore for my health because I feel better an sleep better. I'm sticking to that story for now.
I also am in the process of finding a new therapist near me.
Hey, I'm happy you are back. Huggles, nikki
I also find the nearest AA meeting and discuss what it is that is driving me to want a drink

A couple of years ago when I went to counseling for my drinking, the therapist's main advice was to "shake up your routine." At the time I was too mired in work and other things and didn't really know what she meant nor embrace it.
But now that I significantly shaken up my life, and found this group, I am finding it almost effortless not to drink. No one is more shocked than I am!
In terms of what to tell people as a reason for not drinking, I like either 1) I am trying to lose a little weight and drinking makes it even harder! or, 2) I learned I am alcohol intolerant and it has a negative affect on my skin and blood pressure, so my doctor told me I should avoid it. They are really needing a reason to make themselves feel OK with their drinking, so responses like this gives them the OK to drink without guilt if they want to...
Welcome to our friendly, supportive little group!
Finding something to do that works for you is key. I have started doing a running program to get fit again and shed a few pounds. It's called c25k and you can get free apps for it that run on smart phones. That's just one suggestion. Try doing something you always wanted to try but never thought you had the time for. Like say Ice Skating for example or maybe a college night course. The world is your oyster now you are sober. Hope that helps. Goo luck and stay strong :)
I really have developed High Blood pressure. So I use that in my arsenal now. It's easy and truthful.
A couple weeks ago I took my BP and it was down. This weekend I took it and it was back up. I thought I cured myself with Meditation and no drinking. I guess I'm just going to keep monitoring it now. See if it goes back down. Could be stress.
As far as something to do. I'm keeping pretty busy. I have so much school work for the class I teach and the class I take. Sadly this keeps me from my joyful reading. I also have meditation. I have my convertible which I am taking advantage of driving around while the weather is nice. I have also been looking up any free festivals I can go to. Tis the season.
Thanks for all the input. Your advice is as always priceless.
Not that I have mastered this, but when feeling overwhelmed or demoralized at life, take deep breaths, maybe meditate, listen to soothing music, light a lavender candle, go for a walk - anything to relieve the anxiety BESIDES reaching for a drink!
