Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
Now I also happen to think, like Nicky, that they wasted a lot of money and quite a few rats on this research because addiction to alcohol is quite unlike addiction to tobacco. I think it is generally true, however, as the article states, that most alkies are smokers in general.
I don't know whether this is more true in the UK than in other countries but there is a big drive growing here re tobacco usage. All public buildings are by law smoke-free. At all the meetings I attend I would say that 60% of the people there go out of the room to smoke at the break...less than the article purports.
My personal story is that I could stop smoking through willpower but I could not stop drinking. Being an all-or-nothing type, when I first went into AA - about 8 years ago - I decided to stop smoking and drinking at the same time. I was advised to tackle one problem at a time but thought I could do it. Ego, resolve and delusion got in the way!!! I definitely needed the programme but thought I knew best - bog standard alkie approach then.
Surprise, surprise - I relapsed. But not to nicotine - to alcohol.
I had great motivation to give up smoking and did.
But my alcoholism had progressed to a point that I was personally powerless to do anything about it. That is why only God could help me and He did when I was finally desperate enough to surrender.
here are many studys that have been done in simple language it would apear there could be a similarity in the way alcoholics process alcohol retaining some small part aceltehyde which builds up thiq in the brain of alcoholics and the fact that tobbaco smoke also produces aceltehyde
