Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
There were no 'musts' when I first started at AA, and there were no 'musts' when i started the 12 steps. All my sponsor asked of me was to commit wholeheartedly to what we were about to venture on. No matter how much I wanted to back-out, follow this through to it's completion. And that was a contract I made to myself, not to my sponsor. or anyone in AA.
Step one wasn't a problem for me. I was completely hopeless and powerless over alcohol, and knew it, and I came to understand it more by listening and talking to other alcoholics. Lot's of tears with Step One, but my sponsor used to nod and say 'good good' lol. I am only now powerless over alcohol if I fail to do everything necessary to keep myself sober. My 'must' today, is to avoid that first drink.
What were suggestions when I was less open minded have evolved into musts as I realize promises. I can say that for me, because I am ok with the musts, having realized few promises.
There was a time when I needed them to be suggestions, but as I grow I realize what I must do.
semantics and timing.
But like it or not, there are those who achieve lasting sobriety without formally doing much with the steps. It's enough for them. You could in fact be a long term member of aa without ever admitting powerlessness formally, although inwardly it seems a given.
The only "universal must is truely a desire to stop drinking, which is why the third tradion was written
Just my thought on the matter.
BTW, I was comparing "must" to requirement, not to desire.
I'm guessing despite our slight difference of opinion that we're both sober working the same program this AM..
