Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

I absolutely hate the stigma that comes with being an alcoholic! People assume that you are week and have no morals, no sense of respect for your life, etc.
Maybe that is why so many folks hate going to A.A.? I have been involved with A.A. and have found so many caring people who do not judge me, I was amazed.
At first, I couldn't even say "hi, my name is D, and I am an alcoholic" After going to the meetings for a while, I realized that there are so many people there who have had it worse than me and that they were not ashamed.
They were there to connect with others who are in need. There are good points to A.A. and there are bad....but all and all you will find folks there who have been through what you are going through and succeeded.
Best wishes to all.

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

The societal stigma of mental illness is far greater. Even if one is stable, society looks at us as potential mass murderers or weak suicide candidates.
I understand what you are saying because I use to feel that way and still do at times but it's because I go to AA meetings when my drug of choice are narcotics. So I usually introduce myself as an alcoholic and drug addict, because I have more then one addiction. I am a very sick man :)
Anyway, that's my 2 cents. So in summery, try not to let it bother. One thing I noticed is that some people will introduce themselse as " a greatful recovering alcoholic" which I think sounds better and makes us feel a little better also.
God Bless!
I belong to a advocacy group in my area that helped fight and get it passed a bill back in 2010 that makes the ins company's recognize addictions the same way the would someone having a heart attack.
Still a long way to go but like anything else it has to start somewhere.
Personally I don't care what others think all I know I was given a gift to live life like I never knew was possible. I got mine through the 12 step program but of course there are other ways.
Zach the "stigma on mental health" which you mentioned is in the same category of any other addiction some don't like being put in that category but it is.
As we learn more about addiction thru science I believe that society will begin to understand it better and there will be less of a stigma.
So now I go to AA, I work the program and the principals into my life and I ask for help. I no longer feel ashamed to say Im' alcoholic, or to ask for help.
I do not go to AA, but it has nothing to do with feeling stigmatized. I find the meetings depressing and the 12 steps in conflict with my beliefs. I'm glad it helps others though.
What a concept helping others the way some of us was helped to find a better way of life. So if sitting though a meeting or 2 that's depressing most would agree its well worth are time.
Obviously, since going to meetings did not help me, I do not see myself going to meetings as a way to help others. :-)
