Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
Thanks for posting. I can tell you that I had similar issues when I was your age, sneaking alcohol from my parents and drinking even younger than you are now (though I don't know when you started). Now I'm nearly 40 and am now finally realizing that maybe I am not on the right path.
Consider this, when I began to drink it was because many other people do it. In our society it is widely accepted and the vast majority of people drink. To be the same as everyone else, to blend in- drink. I'm just guessing but I feel as if you are not the type of person who wants to be like everyone else. I can tell you that if you need someone to talk to there are always kind people here who will listen to you and give you sound advice.
I can tell you though I have been there. I was arrested twice as a teenager and got a DUI when I was 19 after totaling a car and nearly killing myself in the process. I still have the scars 20 years later.
Reply. There is no judgment here. I work on the daily with young people not much older than you in the Navy. You can change you life RIGHT NOW if you are willing.
So it's a distraction and the longer you put some things off the harder they get to deal with.
Think the thoughts, feel the feelings and move on to more fun things. Don't put them off, ok?
There is only one person who can talk some sense into you and that person is you. What you are doing is playing with fire and people who do that often get burned.
It may help you a bit if you become aware of what is likely to happen if you continue to abuse alcohol. I know about this because I started drinking at the age of fifteen and went on to become addicted to alcohol. At the start drinking is fun and it makes you feel good as well as giving you the confidence to do things that you would be afraid to do if you were sober. After a while, you start to think that you cannot have fun or do things without a few drinks. Your mind becomes convinced that you need alcohol in order to do ordinary things.
This obsession of the mind for alcohol would not be a problem except that something else happens too. After all, a lot of people take a few drinks and it does them no harm. The other thing that can happen is that a change occurs in the way that your body deals with alcohol. Once you take a drink, a strong craving develops for more so you take a second drink, then a third, a sixth and so on. The time may come when you will have to have alcohol in your body at all times and so you will drink all day. Apart from losing all of your friends and family and having trouble holding down a job, your health will also suffer. Cirrhosis of the liver is a horrible disease that often results in a painful death but that is only one of the things that you can get from heavy drinking. Some people end up with a wet brain and they have to be locked up in a mental institution. Before that happens you can look forward to all sorts of nice things such as extreme hangovers, vomiting all over the place and the very nice one exploding diarrhoea. You may then find that even though you want to stop drinking, you are unable to do so. Young people like to be cool but there is nothing cool about drinking too much.
What then can you do instead of drinking? Well, you can do your best at school and go on to get a good job that pays well and allows you to buy all of those nice things young women like to have. You can be your own person, the one who thinks for herself instead of following the crowd. You can put your talents to good use and enjoy life. That is what being cool really means, not doing something because other people are doing it.
You probably know already that mixing anti-depressants with alcohol is a dangerous thing to do. It also stops the medication from working because alcohol is a depressant. Now that you know what alcohol abuse will do to you, there is an important decision to make. Are you going to keep drinking and maybe end up dead at a young age or are you going to do the cool thing and be your own person?
