I was at a meeting tonight and someone shared about someone he knew. This "friend of the family" is 23 years old and basically a "good kid." Well, last week he was driving just over the limit, and he ended up killing a police officer who was transporting a prisoner. This police officer was married to another cop who's pregnant and who's father is a judge. In other words, he's screwed. But for the grace of God there go I.

It was an interesting discussion, different opinions on the matter. While I empathize with this kid, he did the crime and now he has to do the time. I'll pray for him, as I will for the fallen officer's family. I just wanted to share that no matter how good of a person you are, whether you drive drunk every day or once in your life, one moment could change your life and the lives of others forever.

When I read about an accident like that, it scares me to death - I know how many times I've been behind the wheel when I shouldn't have been.

This will be hard to describe, and I won't do it justice, but bear with me. There's a new public service commercial on the radio here, and it's very good. It's a teen talking to the doctor, because he and his girlfriend were in an accident - he says "I'm sorry - I was just buzzed".

The doctor says - "oh, well in that case, everything is okay" and his girlfriend says "sure, honey, I'm fine".

The guy says "really?" and the doctor says "No, of course not". The message is that driving while buzzed IS driving while drunk. This description is a loose paraphrase, but it gets the message across.

That's sad!! Definitely gotta think twice before getting into the car drunk. :(

This reminds me of a song where they sing about the downfalls of alcohol, but cannot remember of it.

You are right, so many lives changed forever.
Very sad, but thank you for the grim reminder about any drinking and then driving.

If that was the topic at an AA meeting, then I think it's far to say that the group has, at least temporarily, abandoned its primary purpose and chosen instead to engage in controversy. Such conversations belong outside the rooms, and on the rare occasions when this sort of topic has taken over in a meeting I'm attending, I may make one attempt to steer the discussion back to normal. If that attempt fails, I leave.

With you all the way Nemo! I was just going to post something similar when I read your post. The irony is that guy may not even BE an alcoholic, he wasn't in the room and yet a meeting was given over to discussion of it. Hope there wasn't a newcomer in the room, who had gone there to find a solution to his problem!

Thanks for the support Mike. Whether ppl agree with the topic or not, it is what it is. The beauty of posting is getting a variety of feedback, positive and negative. Like Nemo said, anyone has an option to leave a meeting if they don't like it.

I don't really understand why this is a "taboo" subject at an AA meeting. It reminds us of the damage we can cause by thinking only of ourselves, and selfishly drinking & driving.
