Might be an idea to have 4th birthday parties without alcohol for a while yeah. There's some lessons to be learned Beth, Up you get and give it your best shot. Look at where you can change so you don't end up in a semi-social situation again. I needed to put them on hold for a while. Had a bit of work to do on me first. Short term pain for long term gain. You can do it, up you get.

The thing about my being an alcoholic.....I can not safely take any alcohol. This would always happen to me too. I had the best plans yet would end up drunk. Alcohol took my life. I lived in a vicious circle of self loathing where I could see no way out.

Then I went to an AA meeting. It was THAT bad that I saw AA as my only option. I thought going to AA was just about not drinking....my oh my how wrong was I. What I got was my life back....by putting in some action.

Last night I went out to a bar....I danced, I drank diet coke, alcohol didn't even enter my mind...until i left and thought about it! Imagine that! A true miracle for this recovered alcoholic :)

If things are THAT bad for you. If you are desperate. If you need help. Take some action. As one of the members says here....GOYA (get off your arse).

What a curious question. Yes, it counts if you drink at a four year old's birthday party. It doesn't matter if you drink semi socially, socially, or sneak a few shots where no one can see you.

Also you don't get a pass if it's a full-bliown social event, like a wedding, even if everyone else is toasting with champagne. You don't get a pass if someone dies and you feel really bad. But you'll find that happy events, sad occasions, and just everyday life is better without it.

So, yeah, you did fall off the wagon. Climb back on board, and if the ride gets bumpy, reach out and we'll help keep you from falling again.

well you can have 348 days at her 5th BD party. Which is for the kids remember, no booze necessary, as has been pointed out. But you can only get there by avoiding one drink one day at a time.

Hey, at least your daughter didn't drink. It's common here for adults to drink something at parties, no matter which ones.

Small world. I too got drunk at my daughter's 4th birthday party. But even then there was hope, because 14 years later and by then with a well-earned reputation as a deadbeat dad, I sobered off for keeps.

I wouldn't even call it a relapse. I know when I was at 17 days, it was too soon to call it recovery even, because there wasn't any noticable growth/change yet at that point. You're most likely still in the phase of tryin to climb out of active alcoholism. I wouldn't worry if I were you... just put yourself back on track and try again. Good luck

Cut yourself some slack!!!! You did it for seventeen days! Nothing can take that away from you!!! Now just start over again and keep taking it day by day!!! Be disappointed that you didn't stick with it, but don't be ashamed!!
I hope that you still had your wits about you enough to enjoy your daughter and her party!!!

Awww Beth...we're all human and make mistakes. Don't beat yourself up so bad. Look at those 17 days as something to work towards again and keep on going. It's not a total loss. Keep your chin up and remember we're all here to help and support!

G'day Beth 17 days is a good beginning but it would be great to hear when your daughter is turning 5 you will have a years sobriety .Utilize what you have learned thus far and get back on track. Use what you can from the replies to help.

Why are you beating yourself up? Do the number of days really matter? Did you get pissed and make a complete fool of yourself and ruin her birthday? If so then you realize that you can't be doing that again right. If not then nothing to worry about really, maybe you got to that warm fuzzy feeling and thought oh no, not this again and stopped, that wouldn't be so bad cause next time you wont even get to that warm and fuzzy feeling. Don't keep looking back at the mistakes you've made; keep looking forward towards the wonderful (sober) memories you'll be making in the future.
