Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
The closest meeting is an hour away, and with gas prices where there at, I can't afford to go more.
Went to one about 2 months ago cause I keep reading how "great" they are and I went with an open mind as I believed that POSSIBLY, after all of these years, things may have changed (or even maybe that I did?) and I just might enjoy going.
Sat through one meeting and stayed for the 2nd (no one showed for the 2nd) so I talked to the guy that ran the 1st meeting for the hour as I had nothing better to do, and he basically said I'm welcome to come back but I am NEVER to let on I quit for that many years without AA.
I was also asked to learn some AA "lingo" so as not to let on that I did.
In other words, that was again, my last meeting......EVER!!!!
I suggest to people that are new to do at least 4 meetings a week and go with quality not quantity - not all meetings where I live are that great.
Now (I am 6 1/2 years sober) I usually only do one meeting a week, more if I am taking newcomers or speaking at other meetings.
I would ideally like to do 2 but I am not well so have to do what I can.
Meetings are only part of my recovery, the most important thing for me is keeping in fit spiritual condition which I can do without going to lots of meetings.
I found that it didnt matter how many meetings a week I did, if I didnt work the program I couldnt stay sober. But when I worked the program I could do less meetings and still stay well.
He told me because this is a "upper class" (I guess he meant rich and snobby) AA meeting place, that's why I wouldn't be welcome.
The reason I went there is because it's where I went when I did the 1st 5 and it's CLOSE.
He told me the town over would be even a worse place for me to fit in.
Oh well, another piece of advice I should have taken with a grain of salt as he had a WHOLE 6 months in (after countless relapses) and he talked like he had YEARS in!
I'm considering a second steps meeting and that will be additional as I get so much out of the one I go to.
For a long time I did about 5 or 6 meetings a week. Now I do an extra 1 or 2 in addition to my home group meeting, some weeks it is more depending on my schedule.
The reason I still do quite a few is to carry the message for newcomers and potential sponsees.
I do enjoy meetings and I probably always will - they never feel like a bind or chore to me.
